National HIV Think Tank provides a central place for stakeholders from government, academia, NGOs, donors, community and, implementers, under the chairmanship of the National Department of Health, to review evidence related to the HIV epidemic, to identify priority gaps in knowledge and practice, and to pilot innovative projects that will inform the South African HIV response in the near future.

About the Project

The HIV Think Tank was convened in April 2014 under the leadership of the National Department of Health. Under the NDOH, the Foundation for Professional Development (FPD) was tasked to convene the Testing and Treatment Expert Working Group which was originally tasked with finding innovative models to scale up testing and treatment. FPD continued to actively participate in the Think Tank and assumed secretariat responsibilities in November 2015. In January 2017, FPD was awarded a three-year grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to expand the scope of the National HIV Think Tank, which was re-launched on May 10, 2017.
